Travellers pitch up in more than 50 caravans in Herne Bay car park and refuse to budge blocking out

DOZENS of travellers are refusing to leave a car park on the Kent seafront despite being ordered to go.

Around 50 caravans blocked the Neptune car park in Herne Bay three days ago, causing chaos over the Easter bank holiday.

And the group is locked in a stand-off with the council and are refusing to budge, reports KentOnline.

A Canterbury City Council spokesman told KentOnline: "A substantial number of caravans and vehicles began to arrive on Thursday.

"Our enforcement officers have been to the site and instructed them to move on and we are taking appropriate steps to ensure this happens as soon as possible.

"In the meantime, we are closely monitoring the situation.

"Once the site is clear, we will review our security arrangements."

Another group of travellers have caused chaos over the weekend after setting up camp in an M&S car park in Surrey on Friday, reports GetSurrey.

Around 14 caravans took up a large section of the car park at The Meadows Centre, just outside Camberley and Sandhurst.

Thames Valley Police told the site that the force was "liaising with the owners of the vehicles in order to move them from the site".

Furious Herne Bay residents shared their frustration on social media as a councillor said the group insisted they were just "passing through" the seaside town.

Lisa Robinson said: "Just driven past, can’t believe how many there were."

Mark Simon added: "It’s a shame to see speedboats on trailers unable to use the ramp because the free loaders were blocking access."

City councillor for Herne Bay Andrew Cook said: "Being the Easter weekend, we cannot use court proceedings until Tuesday but the travellers have assured us that they're just passing through to the docks and will be leaving on Tuesday and they will clean up after themselves.

"The council are completely on the ball and everything is being done behind the scenes.

"Everyone needs to be aware that this can happen from time to time."
